An investigation into an alleged scam of a local Haleyville resident resulted in the arrest of two individuals and warrants issued for a third person involved.
Haleyville police department received a report from a local resident on November 11 in which the resident felt she had been the victim of a scam.
The resident reported the individuals came to her residence inquiring about the warranty of a vacuum cleaner she had previously purchased.
The individuals informed the resident that hers was "about worn out" and that they had a demo with them she could buy for $1,400. the resident paid the individuals and a week later tried to use her demo vacuum they had sold her and it would not work. She reported this incident to the HPD.
An investigation revealed at least one of the individuals had previously worked for the vacuum cleaner company and had data showing those who had previously purchased a vacuum cleaner from the company. With this data, they were calling on previous buyers and scamming them.
Arrested on November 14, 2008 were:
John Thomas Clift, age 36 of 8140 Hwy 72 West, Madison, AL. He was charged with theft of property 1st.
Susan M. Clft, age 52, of the same address and also charged with theft of property 1st.
Both were incarcerated in the Winston County jail.
Residents are advised to be cautious when confronted by sales people at your home and always have them checked out before giving them money. Never give them your SSN, DOB or an bank account numbers. |
